HONOLULU - The Rebel bats came alive on Wednesday night in UNLV's (12-10) first game of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament hosted by Hawaii. UNLV rapped out 17 hits for nine runs in a 9-3 victory over the Longwood Lancers (9-8) in the team's only game on the day.
After a scoreless first inning, UNLV jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second and extended Longwood's run deficit to six after three. The Lancers got four runs back in their half of the third on a three-run home run, but that was all the Lancers would get. The Rebels added one more in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 9-3 final.
UNLV's scoring began with a one-out solo home run to left field by Kendall Fearn. The freshman third baseman added a second round-tripper in the third inning, but it was a two-run shot. With her two blasts, she now leads the team with four on the year.
In the third inning, Marissa Nichols lead off with a single up the middle. Brittany Freight dropped a double into center. As Nichols was taking third, Longwood's second baseman overthrew her teammate at third and Nichols came home easily. Freight took third on the errant throw. After two outs were recorded, Fearn came up and knocked her second hit out of the yard to left center.
Longwood's Shamana Washington plated the only runs of the game for her squad on a three-run home run off of Kelly Griego. Griego relieved Shannon Crisp in the third and was on the hook for two of the three runs. After collecting one out, an error by Fearn put a runner on. She then gave up a single to put two on for Washington's home run.
The game remained 6-3 until the sixth. Brittany Freight singled to center and took second on an error committed by the second baseman. Maggie Livreri followed with a walk and in the process attempted to take second base, but was thrown out by the pitcher. As Livreri was making her move, Freight took third and home.
In the seventh, Caitlyn Paus singled past the third baseman and took third on a double by Becky McDonald. Britney Hillyer reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. On the error, both runners scored.
Eleven Rebels notched at least on hit in the game, while only two batters went hitless. Paus racked up three hits and was closely followed by two collected by four different players.
Griego earned the win and moved to 2-3 on the year. She tossed 3.0 innings of relief. She allowed five hits. Crisp opened the game with 2.0 innings of scoreless ball, while striking out two. McDonald closed out the final two innings of the game.
Up next for UNLV is a split doubleheader with Penn State at 10 am (Hawaiian) and UC Santa Barbara at 2 pm (Hawaiian).
