UNLV Football's 2006 Spring Game, sponsored by Findlay Toyota, is set to be played at Sam Boyd Stadium on Friday and is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 p.m. with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.
"We're looking forward to Friday," says UNLV head coach Mike Sanford, who will surrender play-calling duties to his staff and instead act as Spring Game Commissioner. "It will have a different feel in our second year because we have more guys out there to perform -- more guys to take a look at -- and that's exciting. We invite everyone out to what should be a fun night."
The Rebels were split into two squads using a draft system this week. The Scarlet Team, co-coached by defensive coordinator Vic Shealy and honorary head coach Rich Abajian of Findlay, will square off vs. The Gray Team, which will be co-coached by offensive coordinator Noah Brindise and honorary head coach Tyler Corder, also of Findlay.
ESPN 920 AM will be broadcasting live from inside the stadium beginning with "The Clubhouse Show" with Paulie and Seat from 5-6 p.m. Then, from 6:00-7:15 p.m., play-by-play announcer Dave McCann and color analyst John Hanson take over to bring you all the action on the field as well as welcome special guests to the booth.
The game, which is scheduled to conclude around 7:30 p.m., will feature four quarters and an abbreviated halftime, along with a running clock in the second half. Fans are invited to stay afterward for player autographs (bring your pens) and a post-game meal on field level catered by Memphis Championship Barbecue.
While parking and admission to the game is free of charge, tickets for the BBQ are priced at $12 for adults, and $8 for kids age 12-and-younger as well as current UNLV students with valid school ID. Meal prices will be $15 and $10 on the day of the event and will be available at the game. Advance tickets for the BBQ can be purchased in person at the Thomas & Mack Center box office through Thursday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
UNLV opens its 2006 season on Sept. 2 when it hosts Idaho State. Season tickets for the program's six-game home schedule are on sale now by calling 739-FANS or by visiting unlvtickets.com.
