Final Stats
TUCSON, Ariz. - UNLV baseball scored 11 runs over the first three innings and went on to a 15-7 win over Arizona in a non-conference contest Saturday night at Frank Sancet Stadium.
With the win UNLV improved to 20-28 on the year, with Efren Navarro Jr. (1-1) picking up his first win of the season. Arizona dropped to 21-24 on the season.
The Rebels opened the game by scoring four runs in the first inning, with the big blow in the rally a bases-loaded double by Braden Walker that cleared them as the Rebels jumped out to an early lead. They added five more runs in the second inning with Keith Smith and Albert Zerega Jr. each driving in two runs with singles.
UNLV scored another pair of runs in the third inning and after three innings led 11-2, which was more than enough support for Navarro Jr., who gave up four runs over five innings in his longest outing of the year. Matt Wagner worked two scoreless innings and then Blake Gailen closed out the game, giving up three runs in the bottom of the ninth in his two innings of work.
After the Rebels had scored 11 runs, they scored two more in the sixth and then pushed single runs across the plate in the eighth and ninth innings. UNLV finished the night with 19 hits and eight different Rebels recorded hits.
Zach Borba and Smith each had four hits on the evening while Walker drove in a career-high five runs, going 3-6 on the night with a triple to go along with his double in the first. UNLV scored all of its runs without using the long ball and had just four extra-base hits.
UNLV wraps up its series with Arizona on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. (PDT) and it will be the final non-conference game of the year for the Rebels.
