TUESDAY'S CAMP STAR:
Sergio Aguayo, PK, 6-1, 200, JR-2L, San Jacinto, CA, San Jacinto HS
Named the first-ever Preseason Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year last month in San Diego, super-kicker Sergio Aguayo adds another honor by being our third UNLV Football Camp Star.
On track to shatter nearly every Rebel place-kicking and scoring record, the Californian was ranked by Sporting News as the No. 9 booter in all of college football heading into 2006. He already ranks fifth in career field goals at the school with 23 and is first in career extra-point percentage with .980 (48 of 49 all-time).
Already known for his reliability, Aguayo proved himself as a long-range sharp-shooter a year ago by nailing two 52-yard field goals to tie and then defeat San Diego State 13-10. That came just weeks after cooly hitting a 41-yard three-pointer on the last play of the game to down Idaho.
The two-time MWC Player of the Week has certainly made a believer out of his coach.
"Sergio is right up there with the top kickers in the country," said head coach Mike Sanford. "He is a great competitor and when the game is on the line, we feel great about sending Sergio out there from almost any distance."
