Camp Stars: Jay Staggs

Aug. 16, 2006

WEDNESDAY'S CAMP STAR:

Jay Staggs, DB, 6-1, 220, SR-3L, Goleta, CA, Dos Pueblos HS

Jay Staggs' hair is as long as his desire to play football and that's why he is our Camp Star for Wednesday.

The senior safety from Goleta, Calif., came to campus in 2003 as a receiver that was quickly converted to the defensive side of the ball. He has since developed into a top tackler and emotional leader on the field as well as a team leader off of it. A member of the 2006 Rebel Leadership Committee, Staggs looks to make his final year his best and is showing it during preseason camp.

"This has been a great camp because we are getting a lot of work done and not getting tired," Staggs says. "The weather has been amazing and I like the tempo of the practices."

Staggs, who majors in sociology, is a fiery defender who is also one of the strongest players on the team.

"Jay has tremendous intensity and a great attitude," head coach Mike Sanford said. "He has great focus and will do anything to help the team, which I love. That attitude has shown up strong in camp."
