Season Captains Unveiled

Aug. 9, 2006

LAS VEGAS - UNLV football announced its four team captains for the 2006 season on Wednesday.

Voted on by the team, the Rebels will be led by two senior captains from each side of the ball: running back Erick Jackson (Palmdale, Calif.) and lineman Marco Guerra (Los Angeles) on offense and defensive backs Jay Staggs (Goleta, Calif.) and Nate Kenion (Concord, Calif.) on defense.

Also, a special teams captain will be determined on a rotating basis during the season.

Jackson is former walk-on who is heading into his second full season as the squad's starter in the backfield. He rushed for a team-leading 673 yards with six touchdowns as a junior. Guerra, who was named preseason third team All-Mountain West Conference by Athlon, moves back to tackle after a year at the guard position. Staggs looks to start for the second full season at one safety spot and comes into his final campaign with two career interceptions. Kenion, who in 2004 transferred to UNLV from St. Mary's after the Gaels dropped their football program, opened camp as a starter at the nickelback position.

The Rebels are nearing the end of their first week in preseason camp. The season kicks off on Sept. 2 vs. Idaho State at Sam Boyd Stadium.
