UNLV Post Game Quotes

UNLV HEAD COACH Mike Sanford

On winning the season opener: "Our goal was to be 1-0 after our first game and our mentality going into this first game was to play well and we wanted to be sound and have a good operation and I think we did that. We accomplished what we wanted to do and that was to be 1-0."

On the play of new quarterback Rocky Hinds: "He did a lot of good things. I thought he had an excellent first half but the thing that is great about him is that he can get better. I think we can all get better as a team. There is a huge improvement from game one to game two on any college football team."

On the overall play of the team: "I think the biggest thing we did was we executed. Out defense did a lot of great things and on offense we executed well. I thought Rocky did a lot of good things and when we had things open he hit them and when they were not he moved around and made things happen."

On junior kicker Sergio Aguayo's injury. "We won't know anything on him for sure until they do an M.R.I. on him. It was on a kickoff on his kicking leg. He got caught in the pile and someone rolled over on it or something."

On calling walk-on kicker Ben Jaekle in from the stands: "I started yelling at someone to call Ben Jaekle who was in the stands. They got him on the phone and I told him he needed to start coming down and get dressed and he asked `who's this?'"

On the two touchdowns on turnovers: "Our defense played great. It's awesome to get a score on defense. I love that and we also got a touchdown in the kicking game. We did a great job of putting pressure on them."

UNLV STARTING QUARTERBACK Rocky Hinds

On starting his first collegiate game: "I was really nervous at the beginning, but initially when I got that ball, it started to slow down. It was really exciting and I stopped thinking about it. It was great being back out there."

On Ryan Wolfe, who had 160 yards receiving: "He's been running great routes and has been really consistent."

On the first win: "It was great for the team to get the first win. I was hoping for a victory and that is what we got and obviously we are very excited about that."

On the play of the offensive line: "The line did a great job. They have been real consistent throughout practice and they are getting a lot better."

REBEL DEFENSIVE END Jeremy Geathers

On playing in his first game: "I finally got comfortable after I got that first sack. It was kind of rough at first but I finally got into it."

On returning a fumble 71 yards for a touchdown: "That was great. I have never done that before. That was a first for me."

IDAHO STATE QUOTES

Idaho State Quarterback Matt Gutierrez

On returning to the field (after transferring from Michigan in January): "It felt good. Most things worked early. Where it went wrong, I don't know. We made some plays early, but lost it somewhere along the line."

On the team's confidence: "Confidence was fine. We put ourselves in a bad position by going three and out and kept leaving the defense on the field. (UNLV) gets that kickoff and it kept our D on the field. The offense didn't pull its weight. We needed to keep the D off the field."

On the Rebels: "I still feel we can play with them. Tonight we lost the ball and missed plays at crucial times."

Idaho State's head coach Larry Lewis

On the offense: "Take a look at the beginning of the game. That was the offense that we should be seeing. We can't have focus issues with breakdowns. We showed an ability to have a running game. There were glimpses."

"We need to continue to get better. Work under adverse conditions. Work hard. Concentrate on what to do. Believe."

On the defense: "Our defense has to play better. We need to sustain drives on offense. We need to have three and outs with our D. Their job is to get the (opposing) offense off of the field."

On having Matt Gutierrez: "We are glad to have Matt. He's the QB we think he's going to be. The offensive line must protect him. When the pressure was on he made big plays. It was a test for him."
