LAS VEGAS - Under sunny skies but continuing chilly temperatures, the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships wrapped up on Sunday with a lone round of singles play at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
UNLV head coach Kevin Cory probably wishes the shortened tournament could continue because his team did not lose all weekend after posting a stunning 5-0 mark on Sunday to go with a perfect 4-0 doubles record.
The Lady Rebels' day was highlighted by freshman Kristina Nedeltcheva battling back to upset 40th-ranked UCLA freshman Ashley Joelson, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Also winning for the hosts was returning All-American Elena Gantcheva, who swept Laila Abdala of Arizona State 6-4, 6-3. Nikol Dimitrova breezed by her opponent, Claudia Hirt of Oregon, 6-0, 6-2 to round out Flight One.
In the Flight Two, senior Linda Tempelfelde defeated Amanda Martin of ASU 6-3, 6-4 and senior Mery Contstanti outlasted Oregon's Anna Powaska 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
"After battling the conditions this weekend, we saw that our players were ready to compete with the best in the country," Cory said. "We started with some outstanding doubles play on Friday and Saturday and finished up with some amazing singles wins over national programs." UNLV is off until opening its dual-match season by hosting New Mexico State on Jan. 26.
