NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After a strong start to its season, UNLV baseball committed four errors which lead to seven unearned runs and the Rebels lost 16-7 to Cal State Northridge on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field in UNLV's second game of the year.
True freshman Matt Hutchison (0-1) took the loss for UNLV (1-1), giving up seven runs, although just three were earned, on eight hits over 3.1 innings of work. CSN starter Jimmy Jolicouer (1-0) earned the win, working five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits for the Matadors (1-1), which evened their record on the year.
The Rebels dug themselves an early hole, trailing 10-1 after four innings of play but attempted to mount a rally, scoring the next five runs in the game to get within five at 10-5. The Matadors through responded by scoring six runs of their own to go up 16-6 entering the final inning.
Keith Smith and Blake Gailen each knocked in a pair of runs on the afternoon, with Gailen hitting his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Willie Bowman scored two runs as well for the Rebels. Todd Shelton paced the Matadors, collecting three hits while scoring four times in the win. C.J. Belanger knocked in five RBI, with three of them coming on a bases-loaded triple that cleared the bags.
UNLV and CSN wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, with the game scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. (PT) with Kevin Skogley slated to take the mound for the Rebels.
