Final Stats

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - UNLV baseball lost for the second consecutive time, dropping a 9-4 game to Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon in the final game of their season-opening three-game series.

The Rebels committed three errors in the loss and fell to 1-2, with junior starter Kevin Skogley (0-1) taking the loss, giving up five runs, all earned, in 4.2 innings of work. The Matadors moved their record to 2-1 and Edwin Quirarte (1-0) picked up the win, giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings.

UNLV jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, thanks to a lead-off triple by Calvin Beamon and then a sacrifice fly by Blake Gailen to bring in Beamon. It would not be long though before CSN took the lead, scoring a pair of runs in the second and then three more in the third for a 5-1 advantage. The big blow was a two-run home run by John Parham in the third inning.

The Rebels did not go quietly, with Gailen and Efren Navarro Jr. singling in runs in the fifth inning and then Navarro Jr. knocking in another run in the seventh on a single to make the score 5-4. That would be as close as UNLV would get, as the Matadors responded by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the seventh and then another in the eighth for the final 9-4 margin.

Navarro Jr. finished the game 3-4 with the two RBI and Gailen went 2-4 and also finished the game with a pair of RBI. UNLV had eight hits on the afternoon while CSN had 16 in the game.

The Rebels return to Las Vegas for their home opener, hosting Pepperdine for a three-game series at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, with the first game slated for 6:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday night.
