LARAMIE, Wyo. - The UNLV volleyball team improved to 19-3 overall and 10-2 in Mountain West Conference action with its 3-1 win over the Wyoming Cowgirls (11-12, 5-9) Saturday afternoon in Laramie, Wyo. The win gives the Rebels sole possession of first place with a half-game lead over #20 Colorado State, who is idle this weekend. UNLV won the match by scores of 31-29, 30-24, 26-30, 30-26, while being led by 22-kill efforts by Maria Aladjova and Lauren Miramontes.
UNLV out-hit Wyoming .246 to .185. The Rebels best game came in the second frame when they hit .429 with 22 kills and only four errors in 42 attempts. The other three games were in the .200 range, as they hit .184 in game one, .178 in game three and .209 in game four. Wyoming was held within .117 (game four) to .268 (game three).
Aladjova and Miramontes tied Wyoming's Angie Hellbaum for the match-high in kills with 22. Aladjova led the Rebels in hitting with her .347 (22-5-49), while Miramontes followed closely behind with her .320 (22-6-50).
This was the 21st match for Miramontes to knock down at least 10 kills, while it was the 19th for Aladjova. By notching 22 kills, Aladjova has hit more than 20 on seven occasions to Miramontes' six.
Melody Nua tied Wyoming's Tasha Weishahn for the match-high in assists with 57. Nua assisted on 57 of the Rebels' 64 kills.
Jada Walker returned to normal libero form and collected a match-high 24 digs, which gives her 19 matches of 10 or more and her 12th match of 20-plus. Brittani Lumsden and Camille Cunningham joined Walker in the double-digit digs with their 17 and 10, respectively.
At the net, the Rebels tallied 24 total blocks (two solo). Miramontes led the way with seven put backs, which tied her career-high. Erin Greenwood had five blocks of her own, while Nua and Aladjova had four, apiece.
Wyoming was led by four double-doubles. Hellbaum combined her match-high 22 kills with 11 digs. Rachel Smith knocked down 20 kills and tied for the team-high in digs with 15. Lauren Whitney tallied 12 kills and 12 digs, while Weishahn had a match-high 57 assists and a team-high 15 digs.
UNLV returns to action next week with its final two matches at home in the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels welcome New Mexico on Nov. 9 and TCU on Nov. 10. Both matches are slated for 7:00 pm first serves. The TCU match will be "Senior Night" as we recognize Aladjova, Miramontes, Lumsden and Walker for their four years of play in UNLV uniforms.
