PROVO, Utah - In its first Mountain West Conference action of the season, the UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept in a meet at BYU on Friday afternoon. The 21st-ranked Rebel men were handed a 185-114 loss, while on the women's side, the Cougars prevailed 173-127.
In the men's meet, UNLV won five of the 12 individual events, but BYU won both relays and took first place in both diving events as well, while using its overall team depth in its home pool to post the victory. The Rebels were led by double-event winner Johan Claar, as he touched first in both the 200 and 500 free, in times of 1:40.28 and 4:35.44, respectively. Also winning events on the night was Kier Maitland in the 1000 free (9:28.34), Jonas Andersson in the 100 breast (56.93), and Devin Phillips in the 200 IM (1:53.24).
For the Rebel women, Amanda Weinbrecht won the 100 back in 57.47, Kim Bonney won both the 100 breast in 1:04.33 and the 200 breast in 2:18.73, and Lisa Gillespie took first in the 200 back (2:02.72). UNLV also claimed the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.68, thanks to Weinbrecht, Kim Bonney, Marina Sandback, and Megan Hunt-Higgins.
The Rebels will remain in the state of Utah, to take on the Utah Utes on Saturday at 1 pm.
