Holmes Named MWC Player Of The Week

Dec. 3, 2007

LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior forward and Las Vegas native Sequoia Holmes was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week after leading the Lady Rebels to an upset of 16th-ranked George Washington, while also earning Lady Privateer Invitational Tournament MVP honors, the conference announced on Monday. It is the second weekly honor of her career for Holmes, who shared this week's award with Leilani Mitchell of Utah.

Against George Washington on Nov. 30 in the first game of the Lady Privateer Invitational in New Orleans, Holmes not only finished with a game-high 25 points, a career-high seven steals, and eight rebounds, she also hit the game-winning shot with 51 seconds left. She then blocked one of GW's two potential game-winnings shots in the last five seconds. Even more impressive, Holmes outscored the entire GW team by herself in the second half, as UNLV trailed 40-16 at halftime but she scored 22 second half points, to 21 for the Colonials.

In UNLV's second game of the tournament against the host New Orleans squad on Dec. 1, she scored a game-high 23 points while shooting 50% (9-of-18) from the floor, and also added four rebounds and five steals. For her weekend performance, she was named the Tournament MVP of the Lady Privateer Classic, as she averaged 24 points while shooting 48.5% from the floor, 33.3% from three-point range, and 70.6% from the line during the tournament. Holmes also averaged six rebounds, six steals, 1.5 assists, and had one block over the two games.

UNLV will return to action this Friday with its third straight game away from home, taking on UC Riverside at 7 pm.
