BERKELEY, Calif. - UNLV designated hitter Chad Miller drove in all three Rebel runs, including a solo home run to left field in the eighth inning the propelled the Rebels to a 3-2 win over Cal on Saturday at Evans Diamond.
Miller doubled home two runs in the opening inning and then with the score knotted at two in the eighth, he hit his first home run of the season to move UNLV's record on the year to 5-6. UNLV sophomore Marc Baca (2-0) earned the win, working the final 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit while striking out four. Cal dropped to 5-3 on the year with starter Tyson Ross (1-1) taking the loss.
With two out in the top of the first, Keith Smith walked and Efren Navarro Jr. singled, bringing Miller to the plate. Miller then laced a double to left center that scored Smith and then Navarro scored on an error that gave the Rebels an early 2-0 lead.
On the mound the Rebels got a strong performance from Chris Saddoris in his first start of the season on the mound. He worked six innings and gave up one earned run on five hits while striking out six batters and walking one.
Cal scratched out a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single and then got another off of Rebel reliever Adam Moser on a sacrifice fly in the seventh that tied the game at two. Baca then came into the game with one out and kept the Golden Bears off the board the rest of the way.
Miller finished the game going 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored as the Rebels had seven hits on the afternoon. Cal also managed three hits but committed three errors.
UNLV and Cal wrap up their series Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond with the game slated to start at 1:00 p.m. (PST).
