The stakes can't get much higher for the UNLV women's basketball team's Thursday night contest, as it is not only their Senior Night, they are also hosting one of their biggest rivals in a key Mountain West Conference matchup for both teams in the standings. And to top it all off, the game is being nationally televised, as UNLV and New Mexico will tipoff on CSTV in the Cox Pavilion at 7 pm.
The Lady Rebels have turned around their season in the past week, as they pulled off an upset of first place BYU in a 76-71 overtime victory, and added a win over Air Force on Sunday for their first back-to-back wins since mid-January. The two wins also improved their record to 6-8 in league play and UNLV has the chance to finish the season at 8-8 if they can upset the Lobos and claim a win at eighth-place Colorado State in the regular season finale on Saturday. New Mexico meanwhile comes in with an eight-game win streak and a win would keep them no worse then a game out of first place, as they are 10-4 overall and tied with Utah for second. (BYU stands alone in first at 11-3).
New Mexico has not had much success against UNLV in Las Vegas, as the Lady Rebels hold a 15-2 edge in the series on their home court and have lost just once in MWC play (Feb. 26, 2004).
For UNLV to win, it will need to do a better job with three-point defense, as New Mexico hit 10 of its first 13 from behind the arc in the first meeting. The Lady Rebels will also need to hit the boards after being outrebounded by 20, but do feature the league's top rebounder in Faye Muller (10.0 rpg).
