Building Blocks

Feb. 8, 2007

LAS VEGAS - UNLV center Joel Anthony's school-record block total from Wednesday's victory over TCU has been officially increased from 12 to 13 after a review of game film, the athletics department announced Thursday.

With 6:10 left in the second half, Gaston Essengue was credited with a block that should have been given to Anthony, the game film revealed. The change has been officially made.

Anthony's 13 blocks is a UNLV and Mountain West Conference single-game record. The previous UNLV mark was Michael Johnson's nine blocks against Loyola Marymount on Dec. 28, 1979. The previous MWC record was 12 by Wyoming's Justin Williams against Utah on March 10, 2006 in the MWC Tournament.

UNLV's team total of 19 blocks remains unchanged, but was also a UNLV and MWC single-game record. The previous UNLV mark was 14 set twice (vs. Utah State on Feb. 1, 1990 and vs. Rutgers on Feb. 3, 1991). The MWC record for team blocks in a game was also 14 set twice by Wyoming (vs. Utah on March 10, 2006 and vs. Denver on Jan. 4, 2005).
