Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - BYU starter Jesse Craig went the distance as the Cougars took the rubber match 5-3 of a three game set against UNLV Saturday afternoon from Earl Wilson Field.
The Cougars got a solid start out of starter Jesse Craig, a Las Vegas native, who went the entire game allowing just one earned run, striking out eight Rebel hitters. Over the last four innings of play, the Rebels put just four runners on base.
UNLV (10-17, 1-2 MWC) took the lead first for the third time in the series, capitalizing on a BYU error in the bottom half of the opening inning for the advantage.
BYU (13-7, 2-1 MWC) took the lead two innings later with two runs, thanks to a RBI single from Collin Fanning and a RBI double from Apana Nakayama.
The Rebels regained the lead with a two spot in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring a run on a single from Braden Walker and getting another score on a BYU error. The Cougars matched UNLV with two of their own in the top half of the sixth, highlighted by a run scoring double off the bat of J.D. Musso.
The Cougars rounded out the scoring in the top of the seventh with a single from Austin Hall through the left side that scored Steve Parker.
Matt Hutchison (0-5) got the loss for the Rebels, as he went 5.2 innings on the hill striking out five hitters. Micheal Goodman was solid in relief, going two innings getting the six batters he faced in order.
Ryan Kowalski had two hits on the day for UNLV, as the Rebels managed only six hits on the afternoon.
UNLV continues its 10 game homestand this weekend as the Toreros of San Diego come to Earl E. Wilson Stadium for a three game set. Friday's game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
