LAS VEGAS - The 54th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its Mountain West Conference schedule by downing Wyoming 6-1 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.
The Lady Rebels improved to 12-3 overall while the Cowgirls fell to 5-8 and 1-1 in the league.
UNLV began the day by taking three doubles matches for one team point. The sweep included the 35th-ranked duo of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva improving to 13-1 overall with an 8-3 win at the top spot.
In singles play, Gantcheva blanked Sarah Summerfield 6-0, 6-0 at the top position. Also winning in straight sets for UNLV was Nedeltcheva, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, Claire Smith, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 and Linda Tempelfelde, 6-1, 6-2, on court five. At the sixth spot, freshman Alisa Razina rallied from way back to down her opponent using a super-tiebreaker, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).
UNLV will continue its MWC schedule by taking on Colorado State on Saturday beginning with doubles play at 10 a.m.
