UNLV Falters At Nevada, Reno

March 3, 2007

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball had a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but that would be all the Rebels would score in losing 7-4 to Nevada, Reno on Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park.

The Rebels scored two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Efren Navarro Jr. and a sacrifice fly by Chad Miller to grab a 4-3 lead at the mid-way point of the game. UNLV starter Chris Saddoris (0-3) gave the runs right back though, giving up three runs and getting chased in the process as the Rebels dropped to 8-10 on the season. UNR moved to 8-9 on the year with reliever Matt Renfree earning his first win of the year, pitching the last 4.2 innings on Saturday.

UNLV tied the game at one in the third on a sacrifice fly by Keith Smith that scored Jarred Frierson, who had led off the inning with a walk. The Rebels then took their first lead of the game in the fourth, 2-1, when Michael Brenly doubled in Chad Miller, who had started the inning with a double of his own.

The Wolf Pack touched up Saddoris for two runs of their own in the fourth to regain the lead at 3-2, with David Ciarlo singling in the first run and then Matt Suleski scoring the second on a delayed double steal.

The Rebels regained the lead in its half of the fifth on three hits that ultimately chased UNR starter Rod Scurry with one out in the frame. Beamon led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a balk and then to third on a single by Smith that brought Navarro Jr. to the plate. Navarro Jr. tied the game with a single to right that scored Beamon and moved Smith to third, ending Scurry's day.

Renfree came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to Miller that plated Smith, but got out of the inning by striking out Braden Walker to keep it a one-run game.

Once again though Saddoris couldn't keep the lead, giving up two singles, a double and a walk that pushed one run across the plate loaded the bases with one out before head coach Buddy Gouldsmith went to the bullpen. Saddoris finished the game giving up six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings on the mound.

Rebel junior Adam Moser came into the game and gave up a single to Nick Sansone, who pinch hit, and that scored two runs, giving the Wolf Pack a 6-4 lead. Moser got the next two outs of the inning, but the damage was done.

Renfree then retired the next 11 Rebel batters he faced before giving up a two-out double to Beamon in the ninth.

Beamon finished the game with three hits for UNLV, but no one else had more than one as the club had a total of eight on the afternoon. UNR scored its seven runs on 12 hits.

UNLV and UNR wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with Sunday afternoon's first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. (PST) at Peccole Park.
