Salt Lake City - UNLV senior Ryan Kowalski came through in the clutch for the second-straight game, driving in the game-winning runs in the eighth inning in the Rebels' 5-4 win over Utah on Saturday at Franklin Covey Stadium.
Kowalski, who delivered a game-winning two-run single in Friday's victory, slapped a single through the right side of the infield that scored Michael Brenly and Keith Smith, breaking a 3-3 tie.
The win was the fourth-straight for UNLV, which improved to 14-19 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play. Utah dropped to 9-17 on the year, 2-3 in MWC play.
A solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning by Bret Baldwin brought Utah to within one at 5-4 but Adam Moser came out of the Rebel bullpen and earned his second save of the season. Rebel starter Craig Heyer (4-3) threw eight strong innings, giving up the four runs on 11 hits while striking six to pick up the win.
Calvin Beamon's RBI single in the third tied the game at one and then the Rebels took the lead in the fifth when Beamon doubled in two more runs for a 3-1 advantage. Utah knotted the game at three in the bottom of the sixth, getting two runs off of Heyer.
The Rebels finished the game with nine hits and no errors while the Utes had 12 hits and two miscues in the field. Kowalski finished the game going 2-for-3 with the pair of RBI and Beamon was 2-for-4 with the three runs knocked in.
