Holmes Earns First MWC Weekly Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV junior forward and Las Vegas native Sequoia Holmes was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Lady Rebels to two big wins last week, the conference announced on Monday. It is the first weekly honor of the season and her career for Holmes.

Holmes turned in 22- and 20-point performances, shot 50 percent from the floor, and averaged nine rebounds as she carried UNLV to a 70-59 upset of New Mexico, and a 63-58 road conference victory at Colorado State.

In the win over the Lobos on March 1 in Las Vegas, Holmes poured in 16 first-half points, including a steal in the final five seconds, which she took in from half court for a buzzer-beating layup. She then helped the Rebels rally from an 11-point second-half deficit for an 11-point win. Holmes finished the game 9-for-16 from the floor for 22 points, while adding five rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

In the win at Colorado State on March 3, Holmes scored nine of her game-high 20 points in the last 11 minutes to rally UNLV from a seven-point deficit. She grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and was 8-for-18 from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, with three steals.

On the week, Holmes finished shooting 50 percent from the field (17-for-34) and from three-point range (3-for-6), while grabbing 18 rebounds (10 offensive) to go along with eight steals.

UNLV (14-14, 8-8 MWC) will begin play in the 2007 MWC Tournament against New Mexico in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 2:30 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
