No, its not deja vu, though it may look like it as for the second straight year, UNLV received the sixth seed in the Mountain West Tournament, and will take on the third-seeded New Mexico Lobos in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday at 2:30 pm. And just like last season, the teams come into Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup just six days after UNLV claimed an upset win over the Lobos in Las Vegas on Senior Night. This year UNLV rallied from an 11-point deficit for a 70-59 win on March 1 in Las Vegas, and hopes to keep the similarities to last year rolling. In the rematch in last year's quarterfinals, UNLV shocked the 21st-ranked Lobos in a 57-45 victory.
With the win over the Lobos last year, UNLV joined Utah as the only schools to have reached the semifinals in the last three years. UNLV has lost its semifinal contest all three times, twice to Utah, once to UNM. UNLV has a 6-7 all-time record in the MWC Tournament, and are 2-1 against the Lobos. New Mexico meanwhile is 11-4, as its nine-game win streak was snapped last year.
UNLV is also entering Wednesday's contest as one of the hottest teams in the league, as it is riding a four-game win streak, tied for longest in the league. Included in the streak are victories over first-place BYU and second-place New Mexico. The Lady Rebels suffered a big setback however last week when sophomore center Shamela Hampton (12 ppg. 6.2 rpg) was lost for the rest of the season when she tore her ACL in the win over the Lobos.
