SAN DIEGO - The 60th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team finished its regular season on a positive note, upsetting No. 56 San Diego State 5-2 on its home courts Sunday.
The Lady Rebels improved to 17-6 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain West Conference while the Aztecs, who saw their five-match winning streak snapped, fell to 14-10 and 6-2. UNLV has now reached at least 17 wins for the first time since going 20-4 in 2002 and for only the third time since 1992. The Lady Rebels now await the MWC Championships at the end of the month in Colorado Springs.
UNLV started the day by doing what it does best -- playing doubles. The visitors won two of three matches to earn the team doubles point for the 10th consecutive outing and the 21st time in 23 attempts this season. The 16th-ranked duo of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva won easily at the top spot, 8-2, to push their record to an eye-popping 21-2 this season. After the Aztecs won at No. 2, Claire Smith and Alisa Razina teamed up to take the team point with a dramatic 8-6 victory on court three.
In singles, Gantcheva got back to her winning ways after being upset on Saturday, with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Alesya Vidov. Nikol Dimitrova won her match at No. 3, 6-4, 6-3, Claire Smith outlasted her opponent at No. 5, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, and freshman Alisa Razina whitewashed her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win on court six.
