LAS VEGAS - Former UNLV baseball outfielder Calvin Beamon has signed with the Seattle Mariners and will report to the team's short-season Class A affiliate, the Everett AquaSox, on June 12.
The AquaSox, which are based in Everett, Wash., play in the Northwest League and their season opener is against the Yakima Bears on June 17.
As a senior Beamon led off and played right field for the Rebels, hitting .298 (59-198) with one home run and 29 RBI in 56 games, all of them starts. He stole 17 bases, hit four triples, laced 13 doubles and posted an on-base percentage of .375. He sat out last season after transferring to UNLV from the University of Texas.
"Calvin is a tremendous athlete who is getting an opportunity to fulfill one of his life's dreams. I am extremely happy for him as well as his entire family, as he has persevered through many things over the past two years and it is a privilege to see him rewarded for his efforts," UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith said. "I know I speak for everyone in wishing him the best of luck from the entire Rebel family."
