LOS ANGELES - The UNLV Rebels improved to 3-1 on the year with their four-game (30-25, 27-30, 30-21, 30-27) win over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (2-2) on day-one of the Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. The Rebels were led by 20-kill efforts by Maria Aladjova (23) and Lauren Miramontes (20). Aladjova notched her third double-double of the season, as she added a match-high 28 digs.
The Rebels took a lead after the first game by out-hitting the Gauchos .250 to .159. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as UCSB evened the score at 1-1 in the second.
UNLV was able to take keep UCSB in the .100-range in the final two games, while the Rebels hit at .295 and .185 clips in the third and fourth, respectively.
Jessica Walters joined Aladjova in the double-double category with 10 kills and 11 digs of her own. Walters led the Rebels with a .318 hitting percentage, while tallying only three errors on 22 attempts.
Melody Nua tossed up 59 of the Rebels' 66 assists. She added 16 digs to give the Rebels their third double-double of the match.
At the net, Erin Greenwood put down five blocks (four solo). Miramontes added four of her own with three coming in the solo variety. Samantha Noland had two solo put-backs, as well.
Besides having three other players in double-digit dig tallies, Jada Walker had 25, while Camille Cunningham registered 11.
The Gauchos were led offensively by double-doubles by Lauren McLaughlin (22 kills, 16 digs) and Rebecca Saraceno (18 kills, 11 digs). Dana Vargas had a double-double by combining her 46 assists with 14 digs. Leigh Stephenson led her squad with 26 digs. Brett Quirarte had four solo blocks.
The Rebels return to action tomorrow with two matches. They open up play at 10:00 am versus Northwestern and then follow it up with the finale of the tournament against the host Loyola Marymount Lions at 7:00 pm.
