CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UNLV men's soccer team was handed a 4-0 loss by Xavier on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2007 Marriott Kingsgate Xavier Men's Soccer Challenge. The loss sent the Rebels to 0-1-1 on the season.
El-Hadji Dieng scored the first goal of the game, when Jake Vollmer's free kick after a Rebel foul found Dieng inside the box, and he fired the ball past a diving UNLV goalkeeper Calvin Bailey in the fourth minute. The lead grew to 2-0 in the 19th minute when Chris Miliano's corner kick was controlled in the box by Andy Dimbi, who then found Jimmy Cummings close to the goal, and his chip shot was good over Bailey.
Joe Fleckenstein made the lead 3-0 in the 31st minute when Slav Ubiparipovic's shot was saved by Bailey, but the rebound came back into the box and Fleckenstein sent it back into the net for the score. The final goal came in the 58th minute, when Matt Soldano headed in a corner kick from Dimbi.
Xavier held a 17-10 edge on shots. A total of 29 fouls were called in the game, 16 on UNLV and 13 on XU. Bailey finished with six saves and four goals allowed while Adam Sokolowski made four saves to earn the shutout for the home team.
UNLV returns to action on Friday, when it will meet Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Meyers, Fla., at 4 pm (PST).
