WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 16 UNLV men's golf team is in sixth place at 13-over-par 589 after the first day of play on Saturday at the PING/Golfweek Preview held at Purdue University's Kampen Course (par 72, 7,467 yards). The tournament is a preview to the 2008 NCAA Championship, which will be played on the same course.
UNLV opened action Saturday morning with a first-round 5-over 293 and followed that with a second-round score of 8-over 296. The Rebels are 16 shots behind team leader Oklahoma State (294-279--573, -3), who is at 3-under and is the only team in the field with a two-round total under par. Charlotte (288-288--576, E) is in second place, three shots back at even par and is followed by USC (293-293--586, +10) and Minnesota (295-291--586, +10), who are both tied for third. Arizona State (298-290--588, +12) rounds out the top five and is followed by UNLV.
Charlotte's Jonas Enander Hedin (69-71--140, -4) is the tournament's individual leader at 4-under. Hedin is followed by his teammate, Stefan Wiedergruen (70-71--141, -3), who is one shot back. Three other players are tied for third at 2-under.
UNLV was led by freshman Ji Moon (72-73--145, +1), who is tied for eighth at 1-over, five shots back of the leader. Other Rebel players: sophomore Eddie Olson (74-74--148, +4; T27th), senior Jarred Texter (75-73--148, +4; T27th), senior Matt Kinsinger (72-78--150, +6; T40th) and senior C.J. Gatto (76-76--152, +8; T50th).
The tournament will conclude Sunday with 18 holes with tee times from the first and 10th holes starting at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
