SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost for the first time in 2008, as both teams were swept in a dual meet at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon. The Rebels lost a close one on the men's side, 133-129, while the UNLV women were defeated by a 149-113 score.
In the men's meet, UNLV (5-2) was paced by three double winners in Johan Claar, who won the 200 free in 1:40.71 and the 500 free in 4:34.02, Richard Hortness in the 50 (20.77) and 100 free (45.68), and Devin Phillips in the 200 breast (2:05.39) and in the 200 IM (1:52.05). Also winning events was Kier Maitland in the 1000 free (9:26.68), and David Seiler in the 200 fly (1:51.52). The Rebels also claimed the 400 free relay, as Richard Horntess, Calan Eldridge, David Seiler, and Johan Claar swam to a time of 3:03.48.
On the women's side ,UNLV (5-3) posted wins in the 500 (Lara Sreibers - 4:58.57) and 1000 free (Lara Sreibers - 10:!6.41), the 200 back (Ana Dangalakova - 2:03.53), the 200 breast (Kim Bonney - 2:20.27), and in the 200 IM (Ana Dangalakova - 2:07.71).
The Rebels men are now off until next month's Mountain West Conference Championships, held Feb. 27-March 1 in Oklahoma City, Okla., while the women have one meet left, at Colorado State on Friday, Feb. 1 at 4 pm in Fort Collins.
