LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team, ranked 18th in the country in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, shot an opening-round 7-under 281 at the 8th Annual Turtle Bay Intercollegiate Monday at the Turtle Bay Resort Golf Course in Kahuku, Hawaii.
San Diego State leads the 19-team field by three shots at 11-under 277. Texas and Texas-Arlington are both tied for second at 8-under and are followed by the Rebels in fourth. Ohio State rounds out the top five at 5-under.
Texas' Adam Wennerstrom and San Diego State's Andrew Cooley are both tied for the individual lead at at 6-under 66. UNLV junior Eddie Olson is in a three-way tie for third at 5-under 67, one shot back.
Other Rebel scores: freshmen Derek Ernst and Colby Smith are both tied for 26th at 1-under 71, junior Brett Kanda is tied for 37th at even-par 72, sophomore Ji Moon, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 70th at 3-over 75, and sophomore Jeremiah Wooding is tied for 87th at 5-over 77.
Monday's first round was played on the George Fazio Course (par 72, 6,535 yards). Tuesday's second round will be played on the Palmer Course (par 72, 7,218 yards), while Wednesday's final round will be back on the Fazio Course.
