LAS VEGAS - The Black Team won the Red-Black World Series, earning victories in four of the six games while racking up a 59-20 victory in points over Red to end the fall season for Rebel baseball.
Chad Claus drove in three runs and Tanner Peters added two RBI in a 9-0 victory for the Black on Saturday, which sealed the win. Peters also tossed six scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while striking out three and walking one.
"The Black team had a great approach to the game each and every day," Black coach Rob Fenn said. "The guys came out hungry for a win, and played hard each and every pitch. It was a real team effort to capture the series. We hit the ball well one through nine, with some key hits throughout the series. Our pitching staff did a great job of competing and throwing strikes."
That followed a 5-1 Red victory in game five, when Marc Baca had a pair of hits to drive in a run and also score once to back a strong effort on the mound from Stephen Singer, who won his second game of the series. He allowed just one run on four hits in five innings of work, striking out four and walking one.
But that was not enough for the Red team in the long haul, as the Black team went on to win the fall title.
"The Black squad really swung the bats well the whole series and that proved to be the difference," Red coach Jeff Prieto said. "Singer came up big for us with 2 great outings on the mound and that got us back in the series and pushed it to six games. Offensively we just didn't get it going and if we made a mistake in the field or on the mound, they made us pay for it. They did a really good job driving in two-out runs, and two-out runs are back breakers."
Over the six games Trent Fuller had a strong series at the plate for the Black team, hitting .533 with seven RBI and three runs scored, while Bryan Resnick hit three home runs and posted a .333 average at the plate. Glenn DeWeese picked up two wins and had a 2.45 ERA in 7.1 innings of work on the mound for the Black team.
Jesse Wight drove in four runs and had a team-high five hits for the Red Team, while Singer had a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings of work, striking out eight and walking one in two appearances.
