Hampton Earns Co-MWC Player Of The Week

Dec. 1, 2008

LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Shamela Hampton was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week after posting the best two-game performance of her career while leading the Lady Rebels to a 1-1 record in the Lady Rebel Round-Up this past weekend. It is the second weekly honor of her career for Hampton, who shared this week's award with Amy Beggin of New Mexico. She is also the second player from UNLV to earn weekly honors in as many weeks, as Erica Helms was a co-Player of the Week selection last week.

Hampton, a 6-3 center and native of Colorado Springs, Colo., averaged tournament highs of 27.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the Lady Rebel Round-Up. In the first round game against Eastern Washington, a 70-69 overtime loss on Nov. 28, Hampton turned in a new career-high with 31 points, and added 10 rebounds. She also made a career-best 13 at the free throw line. On Nov. 29 against Cal State Fullerton, Hampton recorded a game-high 24 points on 11-of-19 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds and a career-high five steals. For the week, she shot 58.8% from the floor, and 65.2% at the line.

Currently, Hampton leads the MWC in scoring at 19.6 ppg, and is second in rebounding at 10.4. The Lady Rebels are 4-1 on the season, and return to action on Tuesday, taking on Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, at 5 pm (PST).
