IRVINE, Calif. - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team swept a dual meet at UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon, as the Rebel men remain perfect on the year at 3-0 with a 167-126 victory, while the UNLV women improved to 2-3 with a 165-126 win.
UNLV won 10 of 16 events in the men's meet. Three double-event winners paced the Rebels, as John Mendoza (500 free, 4:35.46; 1000 free, 9:36.28), Calan Eldridge (100 free, 46.34; 200 free, 1:41.53), Jeff Ellingsen (100 back, 52.26; 200 back, 1:54.20) each claimed two events each. Single event winners included Charlie Tapp (50 free, 21.04) and David Seiler (100 fly, 51.99). The Rebels' 400 free relay also finished first, as Steven Nelms, Eldridge, Tapp, and Thomas Andolfsson swam a time of 3:05.56.
Six Rebels combined to win a total of 10 events on the women's side. Leading the way was triple-event winner Friderika Szel, who claimed the 200 free (1:53.30), the 50 free (24.68), and the 100 free (52.66). Ana Dangalakova (200 fly, 2:07.08; 200 back, 2:05.08) and Alexandra Bejinariu (100 breast, 1:06.28; 200 breast, 2:25.24) each won two events, while Shawnee Landolt took first in the 1000 free (10:28.90), Amanda Weinbrecht won the 100 back (58.90) and Elise Warren touched first in the 200 IM (2:09.55). Weinbrecht, Kelsey Clarke, Dangalakova, and Megan Clark won the day's first event, the 200 medley relay, in a time of 1:48.29.
The next competition for UNLV will be at home on Tuesday, Jan. 6, when it hosts MWC rival TCU at 2 pm in the Buchanan Natatorium.
