Rebels Clawed By Cougars

Feb. 26, 2008

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball scored eight first inning runs but would get no more the rest of the evening and Washington State came from behind to win 12-8 on Tuesday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

With the loss the Rebels saw their record evened at 2-2 on the season while the Cougars moved to 3-1 to start the 2008 campaign. Matt Hutchison (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he gave up three runs in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. Michael Ratigan (2-0) earned the win, coming into the game in the third inning and slowing down the Rebels by allowing just three hits and no runs over 4.2 innings of work.

UNLV plated eight runs in the opening frame using six hits and three WSU errors to jump out to the substantial lead in front of 360 fans at Wilson Stadium. Xavier Scruggs hit a two-run double, Drew Beuerlein hit a two-run single and Bryan Resnick hit a double with the bases loaded that drove in three during the rally.

But from there the Rebel bats fell silent, as their offense produced just four hits the rest of the way.

Washington State scored a run in the fourth inning before returning the eight-run favor, as the Cougars pushed eight runs of their own across the plate in the sixth inning to take a 9-8 lead. WSU used six hits in the rally, the big one a Paul Gran double with the bases loaded that cleared the bags. The Rebels used four pitchers before getting out of the game-changing inning trailing by a run after starting it up seven.

The Cougars then tacked on two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth for the final margin.

UNLV and Washington State wrap up their short, two-game series on Wednesday, with the game's first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
