LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Sequoia Holmes was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Women's Basketball Third Team, the organization of sports information directors announced on Thursday. Holmes earns academic district honors for the first time in her career, and she is the first Lady Rebel to earn academic district honors since Linda Frohlich in 2002.
Holmes, a senior guard/forward and native of Las Vegas, has led the Mountain West Conference in scoring for the entire season, and was ranked in the top 10 in the nation for the first two months. She currently holds a 17.9 ppg average, and just recently became the 13th Lady Rebel to score over 1,300 career points, as she stands with 1,311 in her four years. Holmes also ranks third in the MWC in steals (2.38 spg) and fourth in rebounding (6.9 rpg).
She ranks in several top-10 career lists at UNLV. Her 243 steals is the fifth-best in Lady Rebel history, and is also the new MWC career steals leader as well. Holmes is eighth in both career three-pointers made (67) and blocks (70), and is currently 11th all-time with 612 rebounds. She is on pace to set a new school mark for career games started, as she has made 108 starts in her four years with eight games still left in the regular season. Frohlich holds the school record at 111.
Holmes has been an Academic All-MWC honoree the past two years at UNLV, and has made the dean's list the last five semesters as well. She has also been the team's representative on UNLV's Student-Athletic-Advisory-Committee for the past two years. Holmes carries a cumulative GPA of 3.25 with a major in psychology.
Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams. District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
