LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior right-hander Corey Hales was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today. Hales shared the award with Greg Holle of TCU, while Cody Guymon of Utah was named the MWC Player of the Week.
Hales, an Aztec, N.M., native, tossed a two-hit complete game against San Francisco last Saturday in the Rebels' 6-1 win. He struck out six and walked just two batters on the way to the victory. Hales gave up a single to the second batter he faced, before retiring 21 of the next 22 hitters in cruising to the complete-game win. Hales gave up a single in the top of the eighth for the other hit allowed, and he faced just four batters over the minimum in pitching the first complete game for the Rebels since May 2007.
This is the first weekly award for Hales in his career and the second overall this season for the Rebels, as Xavier Scruggs was named the player of the week last week.
UNLV wraps up a four-game homestand against Southern Utah on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
