UNLV freshman Therese Koelbaek fired her third-straight sub-par round to help lead the Rebel women's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the UNLV Spring Invitational, which concluded Wednesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Koelbaek carded a one-under 71 for the third-consecutive day, finishing with a 54-hole score of three-under 213 to come in tied for fifth overall. Koelbaek's solid play helped UNLV produce a three-day team score of 873 (+9), which had the team sixth in the 18-team field. The Rebels were just four strokes away from third place on the par-72, 6,204-yard course.
Washington State and BYU tied for team honors, as both schools had team scores of five-under 859, which was good for a 10-stroke victory over Oregon and Texas Tech, which tied for third with a plus-five 869. San Francisco was fifth at 870 (+6), followed by the Rebels.
Cathryn Bristow of Oregon took home medalist honors with a three-round score of 208 (-8), good for a two-stroke victory over Ulrika van Niekerk of Texas Tech, who shot a 210 (-6). Koelbaek was part of a trio of golfers that tied for fifth.
UNLV sophomore Natasha Krishna was just outside the top 20, finishing tied for 22nd with a total of 218 (70-76-72, +2), while Alejandra Guacaneme (73-77-71--221, +5) and Kasi Lee (70-78-73--221, +5) were part of a group that tied for 30th. Rebel senior Tonya Choate rounded out the scorecard, finishing tied for 68th with a three-round total of 232 (81-78-73, +16), and she shot her best round of the tournament on Wednesday with a one-over 73.
The Rebels also had a pair of individuals playing in the tournament, as Melissa Mabanta (75-78-81--234, +18) finished 78th overall and Nicole McGirr (87-81-77--245, +29) came in 90th.
UNLV will return to action at the end of March, traveling to Sacramento, Calif., for the Sacramento State Invitational, played at Lincoln Hills Golf Club on March 31-April 1.
