RENO, Nev. - UNLV baseball could not get anything going against in-state rival Nevada, Reno, losing to the Wolf Pack 23-1 on Tuesday evening at Peccole Park.
After four innings of play UNR held a 13-1 lead and would score six runs in the sixth and then four more runs over the seventh and eighth innings to earn the victory. The win meant the two teams split their season series after the Rebels earned a 9-4 win last Tuesday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
With the loss the Rebels dropped to 12-13 overall while the Wolf Pack improved to 14-12 on the year. UNLV starter Steve Rinaudo (0-3) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on just one hit in 1.1 innings on the mound while UNR starter Brock Stassi (1-0) picked up the win, giving up one run on five hits in four innings.
UNR scored a run in the first inning and then exploded for five in the second to grab an early 6-0 lead and they would never look back. The Rebels got their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Jarred Frierson doubled with two outs then came around to score on a single by Bryan Resnick. UNLV would load the bases in the top of the fifth, but could not get a run across the plate.
UNLV's bullpen was not much more effective than Rinaudo, as six pitchers came into the game in relief and five of the six gave up at least three runs.
The Rebels finished the game with eight hits and one error while the Wolf Pack scored their runs on 17 hits, including seven that went for extra bases.
The loss was the third-largest margin of defeat in UNLV history, behind a 25-run defeat to Arizona State on May 30, 1978, and a 23-run loss to Northern Arizona on April 23, 1972.
UNLV returns home for a three-game series against Mountain West Conference rival BYU that begins Thursday at 7:00 p.m. (PDT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
