Final Stats
FORT WORTH, Texas - UNLV baseball carried a one-run lead heading into the ninth inning but TCU rallied, scoring a run in the ninth and another in the 10 th for a 3-2 win on Sunday at Lupton Stadium.
UNLV closer Adam Moser (4-4) came into the game in the ninth to try and pick up the save, but gave up a run-scoring single to Hunt Woodruff that knotted the game at two. Then in the 10th, Moser hit Bryan Holaday and then threw a wild pitch, allowing him to Holaday to move into scoring position. Jimmie Pharr then ended the game, singling to left field to score Holaday.
The Rebels fell to 14-19 overall and 5-7 in Mountain West Conference games, as they lost for the fourth-straight game. TCU improved to 23-12 overall and 8-4 in league games.
UNLV jumped out in front, getting a run in the top of the first inning when J.J. Sferra drew a walk, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and then crossed home plate on a Braden Walker single.
TCU tied the game in the fifth on a Ben Carruthers run-scoring single, but the Rebels responded in the top of the sixth with a run of their own to move back out in front, 2-1. Xavier Scruggs and Walker hit back-to-back singles and then moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch from TCU starter Greg Holle. Rebel catcher Michael Brenly then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Scruggs.
That would be the last time that the Rebels would get multiple hits in an inning, collecting just two more the rest of the way and finishing the afternoon with five. TCU had 10 hits on the afternoon and Andrew Cashner worked a scoreless 10th inning to pick up the win, moving to 7-1 on the year.
UNLV starter Thomas Whitsett pitched his best game as a Rebel, working 7.1 innings, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out three. Moser then took over the ball game and after getting out of the eighth, he ran into trouble in both the ninth and the 10th.
UNLV returns to Las Vegas to start a five-game homestand on Tuesday, beginning a two-game series with Texas Tech at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, with the first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. (PT). The Rebels will be offering 2-for-1 tickets to fans on Tuesday, allowing people to buy a pair of tickets for the price of one. Then on Wednesday all tickets are just $1 to the Rebels-Red Raiders game that starts at 1:00 p.m.
