Paced by the strong play of freshman Therese Koelbaek, the UNLV women's golf team is in third place following the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championships, being played at the Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

Koelbaek turned in an even-par round of 73 on a windy day, helping the Rebels to a team score of 308 (+16) after 18 holes of play. She started her first league championship round in impressive fashion, making birdies on four of the first six holes before running into trouble, carding bogies on holes seven through nine. Koelbaek birdied hole 10 to get back on track, but a triple bogey on 12 knocked her back above par before she closed her round with a birdie on 18 for an even-par round.

"Therese played very well and had a good close to her round, getting that shot back on the final hole," UNLV head coach Missy Ringler said. "Overall we had a good first round and we are in good position heading into the next two days."

New Mexico, playing on its home course, is leading with a score of 298 (+6), followed by BYU (307, +15) and then UNLV one shot back of the Cougars. Wyoming (319, +27) is in fourth place, followed by TCU (324, +32) and Colorado State (324, +32) in fifth, while San Diego State (326, +34) rounds out the field of seven. The individual leader is Jodi Ewart of New Mexico, who turned in the only sub-round of the day, a one-under 72. She is followed by Koelbaek and then there is a group of three that is tied for third place with scores of one-over 74.

Fellow freshman Alejandra Guacaneme also cracked the top 10 in her inaugural league tournament, as she is currently tied for ninth with a four-over 74. Tonya Choate and Natasha Krishna are in a group that is tied for 14th, after they each shot a six-over 79, and Kasi Lee is tied for 21st with an eight-over 81.

Tomorrow's second round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. (PDT) and the first tee time for the Rebels will be Lee, who tees off of hole one at 9:10 a.m.
