LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior Xavier Scruggs was named the Co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, the second such honor for Scruggs in his career, the league announced today.
Scruggs shared the award with Chris Ellington of TCU, while Bobby LaFramboise of New Mexico was named the Pitcher of the Week.
Scruggs, a native of San Diego, Calif., went 7-for-14 (.500) from the plate with two home runs, one double, nine RBI and four runs scored in four games last week, including a trio of league games against BYU.
In game one of the three-game series against the Cougars, Scruggs went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, three RBI and one run scored in a 10-7 loss. In a 10-9 game two win, he drilled an RBI double and scored two more runs as part of a 2-for-3 plate performance.
He concluded the week with a 3-for-5, five RBI outing in a game three loss. Scruggs hit his eighth round-tripper of the season, while scoring another run of his own. Defensively, Scruggs had 32 putouts with one assist and no errors from his first base position.
UNLV is on the road this week, traveling to Texas to play a two-game series with Stephen F. Austin that begins on Tuesday, followed by a three-game set at TCU that opens up on Friday.
