LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball fell to Cal State Northridge on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, as the Rebels lost 4-2 to earn a split their midweek series.
With the loss UNLV dropped to 20-29 on the year with Michael Goodman (2-5) being charged with the defeat, giving up two runs on five hits over 3.2 innings of work. CSUN improved to 21-25 on the year, with Drew Muren (2-3) earning the win, as he threw five innings of scoreless baseball. Edwin Quirarte gave up one run over the final 2.1 innings to pick up the save, his eighth of the season.
CSUN struck first, getting to Goodman for two runs in the fourth on back-to-back-to-back doubles to move out in front, 2-0. The Matadors tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI single by TS Reed, and then Reed singled in another run in the seventh.
The Rebels got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run off the bat of Drew Beuerlein, who sent a shot over the wall in right center, making it a 4-1 game. It was the second home run of the season for Beuerlein and the second of the short series for the Rebels, as Xavier Scruggs hit a two-run shot yesterday.
UNLV loaded the bases on three straight singles to open up the bottom of the eighth off of Quirarte, but he minimized the damage. He got a pop out, an RBI ground by Braden Walker and then another ground out to escape with a 4-2 lead heading into the final inning.
Each team collected 10 hits on the afternoon, and UNLV was paced by Scotty Berke and Jesse Wight, who each had two in the game. Reed led the Matadors, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
UNLV remains at home and will host New Mexico for a three-game series, the final home series of the 2008 season for the Rebels.
