LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (2-3) defeated the Cal State Fullerton Titans (2-3) by a 3-1 margin Saturday afternoon in the UNLV Invitational held in the Cox Pavilion. Fullerton jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after the first set, but watched UNLV rally for three victories in the remaining sets. The Rebels won the match by set scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23.
Fullerton came out strong with 18 kills and a .429 hitting efficiency in the first set, but fell off that pace quickly. In the second set, the Titans hit .000 and barely got above that mark as the match progressed with a .105 (set three) and .130 (set four). Overall, Fullerton hit .158 in the match.
The Rebels hit .224 overall for the match with a range of .122 (set four) and .378 (set three).
UNLV's offense was led by double-doubles from Melody Nua and Samantha Richard. Nua notched her 31st career double-double with her combination of 34 assists and 10 digs. Richard picked up her second, as a Rebel, with 12 kills and 17 digs.
Jessica Walters led the Rebel attack with 13 kills. Kelsey Keeler joined Richard and Walters in kill double-digits with 10 of her own.
Amanda Alles saw her first action of the season and managed to record 10 assists.
Camille Cunningham topped all Rebel defenders with her 18 digs.
At the net, Samantha Noland contributed six blocks (one solo) and eight kills. Noland's .353 hitting efficiency was the best of any Rebel attacker.
Fullerton's Brittany Moore and Genie Francisco led the way for the Titans. Moore threw down a team-high 18 kills and picked up 10 digs to achieve the feat, while Francisco had match-highs in assists (41) and digs (20).
Sarah Day had 10 kills to follow Moore in hitting for the Titans.
The Rebels return to action later Saturday evening (7:00 pm) with the final match of the UNLV Invitational against Miami (Ohio).
Note: In Saturday's first match, Miami (Ohio) upset 10th-ranked Wisconsin by a score of 3-1.
