LAS VEGAS - Team Scarlet scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to come back and beat Team Black, 5-3, on Saturday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, giving Team Scarlet the UNLV baseball Fall World Series title with a two-game sweep.
Brandon Bayardi drilled a walk-off, three-run home run with two outs that capped the comeback, sending Team Scarlet to the win on Halloween night that proved to be a treat for his team and a trick for Team Black's bullpen.
Adam Koglin reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh and then came around to score on Hunty Beaty's triple, making the score 3-2. Team Black reliever Brian Gilbertson then got a fly out and a line out, and then coach Jeff Prieto brought in Max Javate to pitch to Travis Feiner, who drew a walk. That brought Bayardi to the plate and he ended the game with his dramatic home run.
That capped a comeback in which Team Scarlet battled back from a three-run deficit in the final two innings, as Team Black was in position to force a deciding third game.
R.J. Arnold hit a solo home run for Team Black to start the top of the third, and then the team got two more runs in the top of the fifth on an error, moving the lead to 3-0. But that lead would not hold as Gilbertson and Javate could not get the game's final six outs.
Matt Hutchison pitched a strong game for Team Black, going 4.2 innings and not allowing a run on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Billy Wardell got the start for Team Scarlet and he allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out two and walking one.
From there Team Scarlet's bullpen kept it in the game, as Chad Nading and Aaron Asato combined to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit over that stretch.
