LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Jamie Smith was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week after posting two straight double-doubles in leading the Lady Rebels to a 1-1 record, the league office announced on Monday. It is the first weekly honor of her career for Smith, who shared this week's award with Starr Crawford of TCU.
Smith, a 6-0 forward and native of Kaulua, Hawaii, averaged 14 points, 14 rebounds, 2.5 assists and one steal per game over the week in leading UNLV to a 97-92 overtime win on the road at Sacramento State on Nov. 19, and to a close loss at home to fourth-ranked North Carolina, 78-68 on Sunday. In the win at Sac State, she finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and her layup with 20 seconds left in the second half sent the game into overtime to help the Lady Rebs come out with a victory. Facing the No. 4 Tar Heels on Sunday, Smith poured in a season-high 17 points to go along with a career-high 18 rebounds, which also included 10 offensive boards. The back-to-back double-doubles gave her 16 in her career, and three this season, which leads the MWC.
Currently, Smith is first in the MWC in rebounding at 12.8 rpg, and is 17th in scoring with 11.8 ppg. The Lady Rebels are 2-2 on the season, and return to action on Saturday in the first round of the Lady Rebel Round-Up, facing Boise State in a 2 pm contest.
