Five-Setter Ends Season

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 2009 volleyball season came to a close Saturday night with a 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 25-21, 13-15) loss by the UNLV Rebels (8-19) to the Cal State Fullerton Titans (18-12) at the Mizuno Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid. After playing only two five-set matches in the first 21 matches of the year, the squad went the distance three times in the final six outings. The match was the final one, as a Rebel, for seniors Erin Greenwood, Samantha Richard and Samantha Noland.

The Rebels out-hit the Titans .169 to .130, although Fullerton amassed two more kills (61 to 59). The Titans attempted 14 more swings (192 to 178) and had seven more errors (36 to 29). UNLV hit in the .100s four of the five sets with a team-best .280 coming in the second. Fullerton, on the other hand, had two in the .200s with a .234 effort in the third going down as its best. They did hit once in the .100s and twice below that mark.

Kelsey Keeler had a career match against Fullerton, as she tallied her first career double-double on the night with help from a personal-best and match-high 21 kills and 10 digs. She had previously set her career high in kills twice this season with 15. She has reached the 10-dig mark thrice this year. She tied her best in blocks with five (two solo), as well.

Cursty Jackson and Greenwood joined Keeler in double figures, as they had 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Jackson added a career-high eight blocks (two solo) and two digs. Greenwood had two assisted blocks of her own.

Richard recorded her ninth double-double of the season, as she conjoined 17 digs and a match-high 44 assists. She also had two kills and two blocks.

Kela Lau Hee led a quartet of Rebels with 10 or more digs in the match. Lau Hee had 22 followed by Richard and Keeley's efforts. Nile Te'o rounded out the foursome with 14.

Gabrielle Dewberry recorded a double-double for Fullerton with 25 assists and 10 digs.

The Titans had four players reach kill double-digits with Torrie Brown's 15 leading the squad. Erin Saddler and Alex Wolnisty followed closely behind with 14 apiece, while Kayla Neto had 11.

Andrea Ragan topped Fullerton in assists with 26 besting Dewberry's effort by one.

Cami Croteau achieved a match-high 32 digs in the winning effort.

Notes: -Erin Greenwood ends her career ranked second in all-time matches played at UNLV with 117. Greenwood ranks third in hitting (.289) and total blocks (353); fourth in sets played (415) and assisted blocks (294); fifth in kills (918) and solo blocks (59).

-Cursty Jackson finishes the season ranked seventh in career hitting efficiency (.252) and solo blocks (35).

-Samantha Richard finishes her career with 644 assists, which places her sixth all-time.

-Samantha Noland finishes her career with 35 career solo blocks, which places her seventh all-time.
