LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball will hold its annual Alumni Game on Feb. 13, 2010, and the program is inviting all former Rebel players and coaches to call and reserve their spot for this fun event that pairs past players against the current crop of the Rebels.
"Our efforts to reconnect former Rebels progress each year," UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith said. "Attendance at this event continues to grow and by the responses I have received to date, this may be one of the more competitive alumni games yet. We are very excited to welcome those back who have laid the foundation for UNLV baseball."
The game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. (PT) on Feb. 13, but the day will be packed with activities that fans are encouraged to come and watch. There will be a Home Run Derby among the alumni, with each contestant getting six swings to send as many balls as possible over the fence. From there each squad will take batting practice and infield and then the alumni will be introduced to the crowd.
UNLV has won five straight games against the Alumni Squad dating back to the 2003 matchup, and in the latest game, which was held in 2007, the current edition of the Rebels won 22-2, putting on an offensive show. There was not an alumni game in 2008 due to an NCAA rule which has since been changed, and the 2009 contest was canceled due to rain.
"A lot of credit has to be given to all those who have come before us and made UNLV such a special place to be a student-athlete, and we would like to encourage everyone to attend," Gouldsmith said. "We look forward to reuniting players, coaches, families and friends as this is always a great to time for everyone to get together."
All former UNLV players are invited to attend this year's festivities and are encouraged to RSVP by calling 702-895-3499.
It will be the final tune up for the 2010 squad before UNLV opens its season at home against Sacramento State on Feb. 19, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. That is the first of eight consecutive home games for the Rebels to open up the 2010 season, and overall the team will play 16 of their first 18 games at home.
