UNLV Set To Host Butler

UNLV closes out its season-long homestand to open up the 2009 season by hosting Butler in a four-game series at Earl E. Wilson Stadium that gets underway Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. (PT). The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.) before wrapping up their series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. UNLV (7-3) is coming off a four-game sweep of Saint Peter's College last weekend while Butler (1-4) after losing on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading out to Las Vegas. The Rebels are at Wilson Stadium for their first 14 games to open up the year, including playing four doubleheaders. All four games of the series will be streamed live and fans can also follow along via gametracker at www.unlvrebels.com.

REBELS AT A GLANCE

UNLV is now 7-3 following four straight wins over Saint Peter's College last weekend at Earl E. Wilson Stadium ... The four-game sweep came in the form of back-to-back doubleheaders and the victories also snapped a three-game losing streak by the Rebels ... In the final game of the SPC series, senior outfielder Ryan Thornton became just the sixth Rebel to hit for the cycle ... UNLV won its first three games of a season for the first time since 1992, but then lost three straight before the series last weekend with the Peacocks ... Junior catcher Drew Beuerlein is off to a fast start, as he is hitting .478 (11-23) with two home runs and 10 RBI to lead the Rebels at the plate ... Both home runs came on Feb. 22 against Maine, as Beuerlein went 4-for-4 with the two home runs, two doubles and four runs scored, all career highs ... Freshman third baseman Trent Fuller hit his first career home run, a three-run shot on Feb. 25 against Arizona and junior first baseman Kyle Kretchmer drilled his first career round tripper against SPC on Feb. 27 ... A pair of freshman are leading the Rebels on the mound as Andrew Beresford and Tanner Peters have made strong debuts ... Beresford is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two starts and Peters is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in a pair of stats ... UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith has a career record of 154-159 (.492) and is in his sixth season ... The Rebels open the season by playing their first 14 games at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, including four doubleheaders, which is the third-longest stretch to open the season in the nation.

BULLDOGS AT A GLANCE

Butler is 1-4 after losing at home to Taylor (7-3) on Tuesday and then on the road at Dayton (13-5) on Wednesday ... The Bulldogs' lone win of the season was a 12-2 victory at Marian College to open up the season ... Since then Butler has dropped four in a row ... The Bulldogs, who are hitting just .227 as a team, are being led at the plate by Jason Jamerson, who is hitting .313 (5-13) with a double, triple and two RBI ... Ryan Salvino is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two appearances, including one start ... Butler is coached by Steve Farley, who is 428-499-1 in is 16th year with the Bulldogs, and overall he is 481-544-1 in his 18th season overall as a collegiate head coach.
