TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 19 UNLV men's golf team shot rounds of 11-over-par 295 and 10-over 294 on Friday during the first day of play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,057 yards).
The Rebels shot a 36-hole total of 21-over 589 and are tied with New Mexico for 16th place at the 16-team event (ASU also fielded a "B" team). The host ASU "A" team leads the field by seven shots after shooting an opening-round 12-under 272 and following it up with a 3-over 287. The Sun Devils are at 9-under 559 heading into Saturday's final round. Denver is second at 2-under, followed by TCU in third at 2-over, UC Irvine in fourth at 5-over and San Diego State in fifth at 9-over.
ASU's Cameron Edens, who is playing for the "B" squad, leads all individuals at 5-under 137. Edens shot even-par 71 during the first round, then 5-under 66 during the second. ASU's "A" team players take up the next three spots with Scott Pinckney in second at 4-under, while Knut Borsheim and Stephan Gross are tied for third at 3-under. UNLV was led by Eddie Olson, who is tied for 16th at 1-over 143 after rounds of 3-under 68 and 4-over 75.
Other UNLV players: Derek Ernst (73-75--148, +6, T59th), Brett Kanda (79-69--148, +6, T59th), Colby Smith (76-75--151, +9, T79th) and Ji Moon (78-78--156, +14, T89th).
