TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 19 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 4-under-par 280 on Saturday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par 71, 7,057 yards) to finish in 11th place at 17-over 869.
Host Arizona State won the team title by 18 shots with a 54-hole total of 14-under 838. The Sun Devils shot a final-round 5-under 279. San Diego State and Denver both tied for second at 4-over 856. TCU was fourth at 5-over, while UC Irvine and Arizona tied for fifth at the 16-team event with a 6-over total.
ASU's Stephan Gross and New Mexico's Steve Saunders tied for medalist honors at 3-under 210. Gross shot a final-round even-par 71, while Saunders shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday. Four golfers tied for third place, one shot back.
UNLV was led by Eddie Olson, who is tied for ninth at even-par 213 after shooting a final-round 1-under 70. Other UNLV players final-round scores, totals and places: Brett Kanda (67, 2-over 215, T23rd), Derek Ernst (72, 7-over 220, T53rd), Colby Smith (71, 9-over 222, T67th) and Ji Moon (75, 18-over 231, T91st).
UNLV will be back in action April 30-May 2 at the Mountain West Conference Championship, which will be held in Tucson, Ariz.
