IN THE BATTER'S BOX
UNLV (16-18, 5-7 MWC) remains at Earl E. Wilson Stadium and closes out a 10-game homestand by hosting Northern Colorado (9-21) in a four-game, non-conference series that begins Friday at 7:00 p.m. (PT). The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday, with game times set for 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m, and the final game of the series is 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Friday's game and the first game of Saturday's doubleheader will be carried live on KSHP 1400 AM, with Bob Blum and Adam Candee calling the action. This is the final non-conference weekend series for the Rebels and Saturdays double dip is the last scheduled doubleheader of the year for UNLV, which has already played in four of them this year. UNLV is coming off a 9-6 win over then-No. 18 San Diego State on Saturday at Wilson Stadium, the Rebels' first win over a ranked opponent in five attempts this season. UNLV lost to SDSU in the first two games of the series, 15-4 and 8-6, and also dropped a pair of games at then-No. 17 Oklahoma State near the end of March. REBELS AT A GLANCE
UNLV is now 16-18 overall and 5-7 in the MWC after dropping two-of-three games against No. 18 San Diego State last weekend at Earl E. Wilson Stadium ... The Rebels lost the first two games of the series, 15-4 and 8-6, but then earned a win in the finale by a score of 9-6 ... That victory was the first for the Rebels over a ranked opponent this season ... Senior outfielder J.J. Sferra currently has a 25-game hitting streak, which started in the first game of a doubleheader against Saint Peter's College on Feb. 28, and during that span Sferra is hitting .495 (52-105) ... Overall Sferra leads the Rebels with a .437 batting average ... Jesse Wight has hit a team-high five home runs while Drew Beuerlein has knocked in a team-leading 22 runs and is also hitting .407 (24-59) in 17 games ... Freshman pitcher Tanner Peters is leading the Rebels on the mound, having made a strong debut with a 4-2 record to go with a 3.42 ERA and 44 strikeouts in eight starts ... UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith has a career record of 163-174 (.483) and is in his sixth season ... The 163 wins are the second most in school history ... The Rebels opened the season by playing their first 14 games at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, which is tied for the third-longest such stretch in the nation.
GOLDEN BEARS AT A GLANCE
Northern Colorado brings a 9-21 overall mark into the series after losing all four games of a road series at Houston Baptist last weekend ... The Golden Bears are an independent and not affiliated with a conference for baseball ... UNC has split two games with Air Force, including a 12-10 win in Colorado Springs on April 7 ... Northern Colorado is 5-20 on the road this year and 4-1 at home and the Golden Bears have played their last 17 games on the road ... At the plate UNC is hitting .303 as a team and are being paced by Andy Mees, who is hitting .380 (46-121) with eight home runs and 37 RBI ... Friday-night starter Joe Willman is 1-4 with a 7.92 ERA in two starts and 11 appearances, striking out 23 and walking 14 in 30.2 innings of work ... Northern Colorado is coached by Kevin Smallcomb, who is 148-197 in his seventh year with the Golden Bears.
